The Gwladys built at Llansantffraed 1863

In the 18th and 19th century many ships were built on the coast of Cardiganshire. These ships were built on or near the beach. the stoned area in the foreground is where many Llansantffraed ships were built. There are entries in the Aberystwyth Port Book showing some of the larger of these ships being towed into Aberystwyth to be rigged. Many of the latter ships are recorded in detail in the Aberystwyth Shipping Register. insert link to archives. These would show all the shareholders in each vessel and may contain information useful to the family history researcher.

The details of most of these ships are recorded in the The Shipping Registers in Ceredigion Archives Aberystwyth. These will also show the owners/shareholders of these vessels.

Some Crew Lists survive in the National Library of Wales. These were official six monthly returns, and give all crew members and brief  details of  age and home town. They also give the journeys  made by the vessel in those months.

Below is a typical list of rations per week. These amounts were written on all crew lists

 · Bread 1lb per day

· Beef 1½ lbs four times per week

· Pork 1¼ lbs the other 3 days

· Flour ½ lb 4 times per week

· ⅓ pint of Peas the other 3 days.

· A daily ration of ⅛ oz. of Tea.

· A weekly ration of  ½ oz. of Coffee and 2 oz. of sugar.

· Water is to be sufficient without waste.

· No Alcohol allowed on board

· If butter is issued at the rate of 2 oz. per day meat to be reduced by ½ lb daily.

 MUSEUM

Ceredigion Museum Aberystwyth has a Maritime section, and there are many maritime artefacts and pictures in the Ceredigion Museum  The museum is set in old theatre and is well worth a visit, it also contains a large amount of agricultural implements,  and a room in a typical old Welsh cottage.
